Mock Case Studies
Read the following scenarios and discuss with your neighbors. What strategies and technology resources would you use to help these children overcome their challenges?

EXAMPLE CASE STUDY #1:
Student is attending a classroom with a total of 16-21 students.
He has a history of ADHD and difficulty with fine/gross motor skills.
Parents are overwhelmed at home and are complaining that their son can not keep up with his work. His notes from school are difficult to read and he can’t remember what his notes say.
He keeps forgetting to bring home his materials and does not remember how to start his homework.
Teacher states that he has difficulty with his general math facts and low stamina when it comes to writing because of his fine/gross motor challenges.
Strength: Student has great verbal skills but can not transfer his thoughts onto paper and is getting frustrated.



EXAMPLE CASE STUDY #2
Student is attending a classroom with a total of 16-21 students.
This student has a history of ADD and is starting to get frustrated with school.
Parents say that he does not want to go to school.
He is having difficulty with friendships and maintaining play-dates.
Easily frustrated and often get distracted and off task.
He is having a much harder time in large group instruction.
Student is better at math but has difficulty with independent reading and does not want to read at home. Parents want him to read books that are on level but the student keeps picking comic books and graphic novels.
Strength: Computer Skills and Art


EXAMPLE CASE STUDY #3
Student is attending a classroom with a total of 16-21 students.
She has a history of difficulty with reading comprehension, decoding skills and writing.
Some teachers believe that he shows signs of ADHD, but has not been diagnosed.
Work is completely disorganized and has difficulty starting and finishing all assignments.
He often misspells at least 10-12 words during each writing assignment and has no sentence structure.
Strength: Mathematics and Sports

EXAMPLE CASE STUDY #4
Student is attending a classroom with a total of 16-21 students.
Student has just been screened for LRC and will start next week.
Teachers biggest concern is the child’s writing. She is in the upper grades and still can not write complete sentence, her spelling is atrocious, she often sits in the corner during writing time and only puts a few incomplete sentences together. The child does not understand the writing process and often never checks over her work.
Strength: Personality, Very Social, reading skills, average student in math.

EXAMPLE CASE STUDY #5
Student is attending a classroom with a total of 16-21 students.
Student has been attending LRC since 1st grade.
She has been struggling with mathematics since 1st grade and now the school has implemented a new math program that is even harder. Parents are complaining that their child comes home everyday and does not understand the math homework and that it takes her over 2 hours to complete her homework.
Teacher agrees that this student is drowning in the new program. The child has not developed her facts and lacks any number sense.
